    The First Sunday in Lent

    Title:
    "Promises Made...Promises Kept "
    Scripture: Gen 9:8-17
Key Verse: "never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood" (v. 11).
Theme: The Noahic covenant stands out because of the almost unequivocal language with which God vows to uphold, strengthen, protect, and pursue his rogue creation.  His promise is unconditional.  He loves us that much (even if we sometimes [or most times] don't show forth our love for him!)  In this covenant God backs up his intention at the beginning of creation, when salvation history began.  Since then it's been a constant dance whereby we dissapoint God and God seeks to save us from ourselves.  It is this salvation history into which Jesus of Nazareth enters as God's final solution to the havoc we continually wreak on his desire to have us revel in his love.
The Big Question: How is the death/resurrection of Jesus and the experience of Lent connected to the broader history of God's saving work?

    Movie: City Slickers (1991)

"Phil" goes into the tent after confronting the drunk cowhands. While in the tent he breaks down saying that he is almost 40 years old and his life is a waste. The Billy Crystal character reminds him about that when they were children and they were playing ball that if it got stuck in a tree they would call, "do over." Billy Crystal tells Phil that his life is a clean slate, a do over. The scene ends with Phil questioning the ability to have a do over . Yet the Genesis 9:8-17 (New Covenant/Rainbow), Mark 1:9-15 (Repentance), and 1 Peter 3:18-22 all talk about a "Do Over" with God. Lent is a time we seek to live more fully in the "Great Do Over" of redemption as we head to its celebration at Easter.

One of the characters says "a**hole" at 1:21:31, but it's something the sound operator can mute.
