Series Title: Unbinding Your Heart
Summary:
One
of consequences of being human is that our hearts, our souls, our
hands, our feet, our spirits, our minds, they're all bound to sin and
subject to its corruptions. In short, we're stuck. And, unless we get
help in getting unstuck, like a turtle on its back, we'll slowly,
slowly, slowly die.
In the rhythm of the Christian year, Lent is a time of learning to
become unstuck. It involves apprenticing ourselves to Jesus, who in
his own forty-day wilderness journey drew strength from God for the
redemption of his human nature, learning to unbind his heart, soul,
hands, feet, spirit, and mind for the ministry to which he was called.
It is only by God's strength that our hearts, etc., are unbound and we
are set free to be witnesses to all that God is doing in the world.
During the season of Lent we will focus on our boundedness, on all the
things that keep us stuck in sin and ineffective patterns of living and
ministering. Unlike flipping a turtle over, getting unstuck involves a
process. But, the joyful experience of being unstuck also makes
possible the joyful experience of moving fully in the Spirit who is our
life. This is God's greatest desire for us, to get our hearts unbound
so that we can truly live and that others through us might live.
